Kyren Wilson won his first World Snooker Championship on Monday, outlasting a Jak Jones fightback to win 18-14 at the Crucible.

Wilson managed to get over the line during a dramatic final session, which saw the Englishman hold his nerve. Wilson stormed into a 7-0 lead during the opening session, before Jones mounted a mini fightback but in the end left himself too much to do to seal a famous victory.

And along with being recognised as the champion of the world, Wilson will also pocket a significant financial reward. More than £2million is distributed to players across the tournament, with even £20,000 going home to those that exited the tournament in the first round.

Wilson will cash in on £500,000 for winning the event, the largest cash prize on offer during the World Snooker Tour. Jones will have to settle for £200,000, which is no mean feat considering both players sat outside the top 10 in the world going into the tournament.

Jones, world no.44, had never been in the final of a ranking tournament and had to come through qualifying to even make the main draw. He has since beaten Zhang Anda, Si Jiahui, Judd Trump and Stuart Bingham to reach the final.

According to CueTracker, the 30-year-old had banked just over £377,000 in career earnings before the tournament had began. Should Jones complete a famous comeback, he will pocket more in one event than he has in the 14 years since turning professional - a truly remarkable statistic.

As for Wilson, who previously reached the final in 2020 before losing to Ronnie O'Sullivan, he has reportedly earned around £2.8m during his snooker career, but victory would put him among the elite. Wilson, world no.12, beat David Gilbert 17-11 to clinch his place in his second World Championship final.

Wilson did miss out on a bonus £40,000, however, with that reserved for players who achieve a maximum during the competition. So far during the 2024 tournament, Noppon Saengkham is only player to achieve that feat despite not making it through qualifying.

Saenghkam therefore still holds the marker for the highest break at the event, which would bring in an additional £15,000 in prize money.

Luca Brecel stormed to victory in the 2023 World Championship final, beating four-time winner Mark Selby to claim the maximum prize money. O'Sullivan and Hendry have won the tournament the joint-most times (seven), with Steve Davis and Ray Reardon both on six apiece.
