A man has been killed by a tube train after going onto the rail tracks to relieve himself.

The 25-year-old man died at the Tirso de Molina station in Madrid, Spain shortly before 9.30am local time today, when he was struck as the train came in to the station. Emergency services raced to the scene but the victim had "irreversible injuries".

Police say the man was a Colombian national, although it is not known if he had emigrated to Spain or was visiting on holiday. He was said to have been with his friend shortly before going on to the tracks.

Firefighters removed his body with permission from an investigating judge after tube services in the area had been suspended for nearly two hours. Sol, one of the busiest Madrid tube stops, was one of the stations affected.

Witnesses have told investigators they saw two men go down onto the tracks to urinate and one of them didn’t manage to make it to safety before an approaching tube train came into the station and hit him. Transport police are heading the ongoing probe and will submit a full report to the investigating judge.
