Subway is introducing new self-service kiosks across all of its UK stores over the next few months.

The new self service kiosks will allow customers to place their order using a digital screen which is then sent to the kitchen. This is instead of ordering over the fresh food counter. The global sandwich chain said the new kiosks will help "improve order speed, quality and accuracy". The Grocer reports that every UK Subway store will have one by the end of the year.

Self service kiosks are already used by other UK-based fast food chains with the majority of McDonald’s 1,450 UK restaurants now having them. The introduction of self service kiosks has proved controversial in the past with critics claiming it could affect people's jobs.

However, Subway told the Mirror that no jobs would be impacted by the introduction. A Subway spokesperson said: "Kiosks are designed to enhance the guest’s ordering experience and create efficiencies for the franchisee’s team members. They are not intended to replace any aspect of the current process of ordering at Subway."

The global sandwich food chain is also rolling out a new app customers can use to place orders online and to collect points towards an updated loyalty programme called Subway Rewards. The new rewards programme allows you to earn points on every purchase, which can be converted into "Subway Cash" to spend on any menu item.

Under the new loyalty scheme, you earn 10 points per £1 on spending of up to £149.99 in a calendar year, 11 points per £1 spent between £150 and £349.99, and 12 points per £1 spent above that. Each 150 points will get you £1 off your in-store order, and you'll need to redeem at least £1 at a time, though there will be no minimum spend. The new rewards programme was launched last month on May 16.

Dan Holm, digital leader at Subway, said: "Digital integration and growth continue to be a key focus of Subway's transformation journey, and, over the past few years, the brand has made impressive strides. As we think about Subway's future, we're doubling down on our global digital commitment to streamline and simplify the guest experience from start to finish and improve operational efficiencies for our franchisees."

According to Subway's website, as of February 2023, there were around 2,300 Subway locations in the UK with 1,7790 in England, 197 in Scotland, 99 in Wales and 93 in Northern Ireland. You can find your local subway branch on its website
