A man accused of a spree of murders occurring on or near Gilgo Beach on Long Island, New York State, maintained a document allegedly used to "blueprint" his crimes, prosecutors stated on Thursday.

Previously charged with killing four women and deserting their bodies along a beach highway, Rex Heuermann now faces charges for an additional two murders. This follows prosecutors unearthing fresh DNA evidence and discovering a computer document which prosecutors claim served as the 'blueprint' for his alleged horrendous crimes.

The 60-year-old serial killer suspect stood before a judge on Long Island on Thursday facing allegations of murdering Jessica Taylor and Sandra Costilla - two women who have long been presumed victims of men exploiting sex workers. The newly-levied charges follow extensive searches through the suspect's residence and the wooded areas on Long Island by law enforcement in connection to the investigation into the infamous Gilgo Beach serial killings.

The more innovative forensic testing methods enabled the prosecutors to match hairs discovered close to both victims to a DNA profile believed to belong to Heuermann. Additionally, prosecutors claim they unearthed a sinister "planning document" saved on a hard drive found in Heuermann's basement, reportedly used to meticulously plot his alleged heinous killings.

Since late 2010, police have been probing the deaths of at least 10 individuals - predominantly female sex workers - whose remains were found along a secluded highway near Gilgo Beach on Long Island's south shore. The victims vanished over a span of fourteen years, with some disappearing as far back as the nineties.

Heuermann resided opposite the area where the bodies were discovered. He was subsequently arrested in late July.

Fresh investigations involving mobile phone location data and DNA samples helped connect the suspect to several victims, according to prosecutors. He was initially charged with the murders of four women: Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Lynn Costello and Maureen Brainard-Barnes.

Last summer, investigators conducted an extensive search of Heuermann's home and even dug up his garden. They returned to the house last month and spent nearly a week conducting another thorough search, focusing mainly on the basement, as per a lawyer representing Heuermann's wife.

This followed a search in April of a wooded area in Manorville, situated about 40 miles (65 kilometres) east of Heuermann's residence, which is connected to another Gilgo Beach victim. The architect, who has been in custody since his arrest, has entered a plea of not guilty. He is scheduled to return to court for a status hearing on July 30, but no trial date has been set yet.
