A nun has dispelled myths about their chosen way of life and revealed that they are more similar to the rest of us than you might expect.

In a surprisingly candid interview, the nun revealed that she was recently terrified after being surrounded by a group of drunken football yobs on a train. She also admitted that she has found celibacy difficult at times.

Despite dedicating her life to religion and quiet contemplation, Sister Gabriel has many of the same desires any other woman may experience.

She has been a nun for 30 years but before she made the life changing decision she went to university and studied aeronautical and mechanical engineering. She went on to work as an engineer for a year in Czechoslovakia, helping to improve British safety standards in their machinery.

Speaking to LadBible TV, Sister Gabriel, who is one of the Poor Clare Franciscan nuns in Arundel, West Sussex, agreed to answer some very probing questions, including if nuns drink alcohol. Her answer may come as a shock to many. "They certainly do," she said without hesitation before adding, "the answer to that is yes and if you'd like to ask me what my tipple is, it's a bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale."

She was also bluntly asked if she found it hard living without sex and again her answer was rather eyebrow raising. Sister Gabriel, who explained that she had a life before becoming a nun and fell in love while at university, revealed nuns still have crushes. "You might even be surprised to know that some nuns have fancied men while they're being nuns," she said.

"Because you're a nun, doesn't mean that you're not a sexual being and that you don't have a sexuality. I'm not some anodyne woman who doesn't have feelings and emotions. Of course I have fancied a man." She added: "It can be hard to be celibate. I think at different moments in my life, it's been more difficult than at other times.”

Sister Gabriel also discussed some of the abuse she has suffered at the hands of those who disagree with her religious choice, saying she often feels disrespected and has been "spat on" and verbally abused in the street. Being extremely generous in her understanding, she believes it's because something bad may have happened to those people in the church and they want to take it out on someone wearing a habit.

However, recently she was forced to endure an horrific incident on a train from Chester to London which left her "really, really, really scared". A group of drunk football fans going to a match got on the train and surrounded her. Sister Gabriel says she doesn't mind being the butt of jokes and can laugh at herself but on this occasion she was terrified and horribly intimidated.

"It's very, very scary if you are on your own and you've got a group of people who surround you and start chanting at you, and in a sort of aggressive, non-physical way, and that can be quite scary," she said adding, "it was absolutely terrible. It was so terrible and they were drunk, you see, it was alcohol-induced, but I mean, what they said was just unspeakable. But there we go. It's life, isn't it?"

She was also asked about sexual abuse in the Catholic church, which she revealed "saddened" her. "I'm ashamed of that and I am sorry for that," she said. "I am deeply saddened by that, and I really pray for the people who have been abused by people in the Catholic church and I hope that they are listened to and cared for."
