HULL CITY have sacked Liam Rosenior despite him being nominated for Manager of the Year.

The Englishman led the Tigers to a seventh-placed finish in the Championship, just three points shy of the playoffs.

Rosenior, 39, had only extended his contract with the club in December.

He had put pen to paper on a three-year deal. However, he has only made it through five months.

He took over the job at the MKM Stadium in 2022.

It has now been confirmed that he has been axed by the club after missing out on the top six.

A statement from owner Acun Ilicali read: "This has been the most difficult decision I have had to make as chairman of this wonderful football club.

"No matter how trying the circumstance, I have to remove personal sentiment from these moments and ensure the long-term vision of the club is at the centre of my thinking.

"Since Liam’s arrival, we have enjoyed an open working relationship and progress has undoubtedly been made over the course of his tenure. He will always be a part of this family and I thank him for all his work.

"However, it has become evident that our visions for the future are not aligned and I feel that now is the time to make a change. Our philosophy is clear, we will continue to drive this club forward, and whilst doing so I will continue to be open and transparent with our fans.

"I know what this football club can achieve, and we will not stop in the pursuit of that. We have worked hard over the last two years to develop our squad.

"We now have many highly talented players at our disposal and we will continue to invest and improve our playing personnel to give this club and its fans the success they deserve."

Hull lost their final game of the season to strugglers Plymouth Argyle.

Speaking after the game in what has turned out to be his final interview as manager, he insisted that it had been a positive season.

He said: "The energy and intensity they put into the game, they deserved their win overall.

"Even though results didn't go our way, we wanted to finish on a really positive note because that would have summed up the season.

"It has been a positive season but we couldn't quite get over the line today.

"Part of me not quite expected it, but I knew we would be a team that would have to learn on the job.

"Sometimes you can watch us play and we make so many young decisions but we are so fearless in the way we play.

"It is our biggest strength but sometimes our biggest weakness."

Rosenior enjoyed a 16-year long playing career that saw him feature for the likes of Bristol City, Fulham, Reading, Hull and Brighton and Hove Albion.

He retired in 2018 and started coaching with the Seagulls and then moved to Derby County as a specialist.

He had his first taste of management as an interim boss at the Rams after Wayne Rooney resigned in June 2022.

Rosenior was relieved of his duties in September that year and joined Hull the next month.
