EVERYONE has heard of an overbearing mother-in-law, but one woman's actions may take the cake.

She didn't hold back when it came to sharing her thoughts on her first grandson's name.

In a Reddit post, user RAthrowaway98989 explained how her mother-in-law has been pressuring her to change her infant son's name.

The woman revealed that she and her husband have three children, two girls and a boy.

Her 3-year-old son was named after her grandfather and, at the time, there were no objections from her mother-in-law.

However, when it became apparent that she would have no other grandsons, the older woman petitioned for her daughter-in-law to change the name.

"My husband's family has this tradition where the firstborn son is given the 'family name' and they pass it along to their firstborn son," she explained.

"The thing is my husband is not the firstborn son, he has two older brothers."

The Reddit user explained that the oldest brother already has the family name but doesn't want to have kids.

Her other brother-in-law had only girls, meaning the original poster's son is the only boy in the younger generation.

"My mother-in-law brought up the idea of changing my son's name," she revealed.

While the older woman had already overstepped, the couple couldn't believe her reasoning.

"My mother-in-law said she doesn't feel the same love for my son as she does for our daughters because he doesn't have the family name," the Redditor said.

"I asked her how she could say that and my mother-in-law said it was because her oldest failed her and my son was the only boy grandchild she had."

While the woman didn't reveal the family name, she described it as "really bad."

She added that her oldest brother-in-law had even changed his name once he became an adult.

The poster also explained that her mother-in-law had been attempting to guilt her husband's middle brother into having more children in an effort to keep the name alive.

Both couples have set boundaries with the older woman over the situation.

Reddit users shared their thoughts on the grandmother's behavior in the comments section.

"Your mother-in-law sounds crazy. How she thinks this is even a rational suggestion is beyond me," wrote one reader.

"I’d tell her that she isn’t going to be around any of you until she gets over loving your son 'less' because of his name."

"Not only admits to loving your child less but demands you change a 3-YEAR-OLD'S name?!" asked another person.

"I'd be mad if she demanded you change a 3-month-old's but years? Absolutely not. I'd go severely low contact if not, no contact."

"The only person allowed to even suggest changing a 3-year-old's name is the 3-year-old in question," pointed out a third commenter.

"Honestly, this sort of mindset makes no sense to me. Is your son family? Yes. Then his name by default is a family name," said another Redditor.
