Manchester United star Brendon Williams has written an emotional goodbye to the club after being released after 17 years at Old Trafford.

Williams has been with United since just the age of nine but will now see his time with the Manchester club come to an end with the conclusion of the four-year contract he signed in 2020. The full-back appeared 51 times for the Red Devils' first team after breaking into the first team under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2019 and scored one Premier League goal.

The 23-year-old played on loan last season at Ipswich Town and scored twice in 17 appearances. However, Williams will now be on the lookout for a new club after United confirmed his departure and released a classy statement thanking the youth team graduate.

The United statement began: "Brandon Williams is to leave Manchester United at the end of the contract, with best wishes from everybody at the club." The announcement then ended with the club wishing the young Mancunian all the best: "Brandon will always be welcome back at the club, through our Academy's successful Alumni programme, and we would like to wish him the very best of luck for the future."

Williams has made no secret of his love for United and has now written an affectionate post on Instagram declaring his ongoing love and admiration for the club, as well as praising United staff and officials. The young defender, who also featured for Norwich City on loan in the 2021-2022 season, said:"I always hoped I would have never had to make this post but here we are. Since the age of 7 this Manchester United football club has been part of my life from the cliff to Carrington day in day out."

The post, which featured a compilation of Williams' time at United and was soundtracked to the Adele song 'Hometown Glory', reserved a special shoutout to his 'brothers' at the club as he added: "But to have been able to make brothers which will last a lifetime I want to thank my teammates, especially the ones I’ve shared the past 17 years with.

"Thank you to the staff the kitmen, maintenance workers, security, and physios I could go on and on you were all amazing and of course the coaches."

Williams then signed off with a passionate pronouncement that he will always be a fan, thanked the United faithful and cryptically hinted that an announcement on where he goes next may be imminent: "Then most importantly THANKYOU to you fans the backbone of the club the reason we work so hard for to be able to perform at the highest level because you all deserve it. Watch this space ! OVERANDOUT ONCE A RED ALWAYS A RED."

In addition to Williams, Manchester United also confirmed the departures of several players after announcing their official retained players list. The club have revealed that Anthony Martial and Raphael Varane will be moving elsewhere having reached the ends of their respective contracts.

Martial is leaving the club after making 317 appearances and scoring 90 goals during his nine years at United while fellow Frenchman Varane is also departing following three seasons in Manchester. The club have confirmed that discussions remain open with Jonny Evans and Tom Heaton over potential new contracts while Omari Forson has formally been offered a new deal.

United have also confirmed Charlie McNeil will leave the club to ‘seek new opportunities elsewhere’. Marcus Lawrence and Kie Plumley will also leave the club, along with Under-21 player-coach Tom Huddlestone.
