A body has been found in the search for missing Michael Mosley – who disappeared during a holiday hike on Wednesday sparking a major search and rescue operation.

The diet guru, who often appears on This Morning to share his health advice, went missing on the Greek island of Symi and was last with friends at Agios Nikolaos beach before going alone for a walk to the centre of the island. When the 67-year-old didn't show up again by 7.30pm that evening, his wife Clare Bailey sounded the alarm.

An extensive search operation led by emergency workers has taken place over the past few days, and on Sunday, a body was discovered in a rocky area of Agia Marina beach - around 30 minutes' walk from the village of Pedi, where Mosley was last seen. The body, which is yet to be formally identified, was found beneath a fence that runs around a bar on the beach, which is surrounded by hilly, rocky terrain.

Police arrived at Agia Marina bar around 20 minutes after the decomposed body was discovered lying face up about 90 metres from the coastline. The body was found alongside an umbrella – a key clue that helped authorities know they were on the right path.

Dr Mosley, who was captured walking on CCTV in blue shorts and a cap, was also tragically seen holding an umbrella, appearing to protect himself from the harsh rays during the heatwave. Greek authorities shifted their focus to the treacherous mountainous area after CCTV footage from a house at the edge of a small marina in the village of Pedi showed the presenter walking towards a mountainous path at about 2pm local time on Wednesday.

Agia Marina bar manager Ilias Tsavaris, 38, first saw the body alongside journalists after the island’s mayor “saw something” by the fence of the bar and alerted staff. He said: "They saw it with the boat. The mayor came and saw something so that is when they called me and said ‘Hey they saw something go and check there’.

"They called me, they said ‘You know what we saw something from far away, can you go and check’ so I went there. So when I walked up I saw something like a body to make sure. You don’t see a dead body everyday, it is not a warzone, it’s summer you are supposed to have fun and swimming.

"He came from Pedi OK, and he walked not through the restaurant. If he had walked through there (the bar) we would have checked the cameras." He said "rescuers had searched that area everyday with helicopters".

The search effort has been widespread, operating in dangerous conditions and high temperatures, and has included police, firefighters with drones, Greek Red Cross workers, divers, a search dog and a helicopter. New footage released on Saturday also appears to show Mosley walking unimpeded with an umbrella near to the marina.

Mosley’s four children joined their mother on Symi to help with the search efforts. In a statement shared on Saturday, his wife said: "It has been three days since Michael left the beach to go for a walk. The longest and most unbearable days for myself and my children.

"The search is ongoing and our family are so incredibly grateful to the people of Symi, the Greek authorities and the British Consulate who are working tirelessly to help find Michael. We will not lose hope".
