Mauricio Pochettino called for Chelsea to kill the rumours surrounding his future but sparked more ahead of his side's clash versus Nottingham Forest.
The Blues boss has endured weeks of speculation over his position in the Stamford Bridge hot seat and has turned up the temperature on club bosses. Pochettino is coming to the final year of his contract after arriving last summer, and has faced the possibility he could leave in the coming weeks.
The 52-year-old even admitted in his press conference on Friday that he could decide to depart the club in an illustration he is not the only figure being assessed in the final week of the season. Pochettino was tasked with leading a young side after a dramatic squad overhaul and lavish spending he had little say in following his arrival.
"There are two parts who can take a decision," he explained. "It is not only because Chelsea are not happy, the owners are not happy, the sporting directors are not happy, maybe we are not happy because we arrived here with some job to do but in the end it has not happened what we expect."
"Maybe we are not happy. I don’t say that I am not happy but always it is lacking one side. Maybe the other side say ‘OK, maybe until here’ and we split. It is not a problem. It is not going to be the end of the world."
Premier League odds and betting tipsWith Chelsea in contention for a spot in Europe, it remains unclear if that is enough to convince club bosses he should stick around. Despite any misgivings Pochettino is still envisioning a long future.
"I always try to be positive, I am going to be positive, I want to positive, and of course, I project myself here for a long period – more than only the one year that it says in my contract – because we really trust in our work," said the former Spurs boss. "If that doesn’t happen, yes, that’s not in our hands."
Pochettino is comfortable in his position but revealed that speculation could be impacting the people he works with at the club. The doubts are not healthy for the club to continue.
"In the way we are not comfortable is to put in doubt — like are you are talking — are going to be here or not here? First, it is not my decision because if the owners are thinking to change — yes, for sure in one week we will know. That’s an instability with which we are comfortable with working.
"It’s true that in the last few months, like we were talking, that question is always coming. You need to kill the rumours if that’s not true, if not the rumour is there for a different strategy. If you ask is it affecting me? It is not affecting me. Is it affecting the people working with us? I think yes because in the end you can kill the rumour, sack me and that’s not a problem. It happens in a lot of clubs."
The Blues head coach retains a strong appreciation for the club's 'unbelievable' and 'warm; staff but requires the club to be 'all together from the owners to the security man on the gate' to win. Pochettino has conceded that his bosses simply may be unconcerned by the rumours.
"We are planning everything, all the strategies for the future but you ask me ‘But you are going to be here next season?’ I don’t know. I have one more year of contract, yes. And maybe they are thinking that we have a contract so they do not need to clarify nothing in front of all the rumours that you are asking me about. That maybe the situation is that they are not worried about the rumours. But it’s true that there are too many rumours in the last few months."
