Toilet cleaning is not always an easy feat.

Despite scrubbing persistently, yellow stains can frustratingly remain on the toilet seat. In her quest to rid her toilet seat of these unsightly marks, Lilian Beckett reached out on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page for advice, asking: "White toilet seat going yellow on edge, what should I use to clean it?"

Many might leap at the idea of using bleach, yet members of the group suggested steering clear of this option. They emphatically stated that bleach 'doesn't work', and could even exacerbate the problem. Suzi Robinson maintained: "Bleaching doesn't work." Aligning with her, Theresa Turner commented: "I found bleaching makes it worse."

Michael Barnes advised against possible damage: "Never use bleach on the plastic toilet seats. It eats into the shiny resistant coating." Speaking from experience, Carol Meares warned: "Bleaching causes plastic to yellow." In strong agreement, Ann Stanton cautioned: "Don't put bleach down the toilet and close the lid. The fumes will yellow the plastic."

Instead many cleaning fans were raving about the abilities magic sponges have. Christine Richards said: "After reading a comment on Facebook, I tried a magic sponge and it did a great job. I'd give it a try." Sheila Gillmore commented: "Use a magic sponge. They're absolute genius. It worked for me in seconds."

Sue Crowder claimed: "The only thing that worked for me was a magic eraser." Jackie Thornley said: "I've just removed mine with a magic sponge. Looks perfect now." While there are branded versions of the magic sponge, group members claimed that the cheaper ones work just as well.

Nick Jackson wrote: "Branded magic sponges are expensive so suggest getting a multipack of non-branded Melamine sponges off Amazon." Households can pick up a pack of 10 magic sponges from Nisbets for £4.42 - this works out to 44p per sponge. Alternatively, households can purchase a pack of 10 magic sponges from Amazon for £4.98 currently down from £6.99.
