England’s ‘most patriotic estate’ is gearing up for Euro 2024 with the unveiling of an incredible Eberechi Eze mural.

The Kirby estate in Bermondsey, south London, is known for going all out when England competes in a major tournament. And this year is no different, with a sea of flags and bunting due to be in place by the time England play Serbia on Sunday.

The main attraction this year is the mural of 25-year-old Eze, who is from nearby Greenwich. He played for local south London teams including at Under 16s for Millwall, the club closest to the estate, while also going to a local school.

Artists from MurWalls - the street artist team behind a string of famous works - were grafting throughout Tuesday and Wednesday to finish the project. Dad of three Chris Dowse, 45, is one of the organisers of the customary estate celebrations.

He said: “By Sunday, we’ll be all ready with the flags and the bunting.” There won’t be quite the same number of flags as normal, he said, because the price per flag has now shot up to £3.

When they began the events back in 2012, and for subsequent years, they costed 33p. The last tournament was at £2 and that price has rocketed again.

“It won’t be quite the same number, we just don’t have that amount of money to burn, but we’ve still got quite a few and there’ll be loads of bunting,” he said. “And as always we’re asking all nationalities on the estate to put their own flags up. It’s a brilliant community and we all love getting together on these occasions.

“If we get to the semi-finals we’ll have a big screen up and a barbecue and music, but let’s see how far we go!”

The new mural is the latest in a string of art works celebrating the nation.

Walls are also adorned with images of the estate’s namesake, Lionesses midfielder Fran Kirby, a huge St George’s cross and the fallen soldiers of past wars. It’s captured the imagination of England fans and even the team itself.
