While you'll always hear a Max or Luna being called in the dog park, you don't often hear a name that makes you do a double-take. But one woman has shared how her boyfriend refuses to call her dog by its real name in public because it's "awkward and embarrassing".

On Reddit, she explained how she adopted a dachshund mix and decided to name him Dogmeat after the canine in the video game series Fallout. She said: "When I was 18 I thought it was funny because he looks nothing like the original dog he's named after. I still think it's funny. He has a lot of nicknames though.

  • 'I caught my mum sleeping with my husband - I can't erase the image from my mind'
  • "Whenever my boyfriend, my dog, and I meet someone new, he interjects immediately and goes, 'His name is Meatball.' It's mostly just with older people. He gets a little awkward because we've had a few weird interactions before. I think he gets a little embarrassed/nervous now."

But because she enjoys embarrassing him, she says she usually corrects him, saying: "Actually, his government name is Dogmeat, but he looks like a Meatball." She added: " I just don't care who doesn't like my dogs name, so I tell anyone his real name. I have also named animals Stinker, Chicken Nugget, Bartholomeow, and Satan. Why not?"

Commenting on her post, one user said: "I know someone whose dog's name is 'Hello My Name is Scott'. I’m not joking." Another user added: "I think that's hilarious. Tell Dogmeat he's the best boy." A third user said: "My mum had a dog called Pip, but my sister wouldn’t have it and for its entire life she called it Laughing Gravy."
