Elon Musk has angered X users once again after releasing a major new update - and refuses to make a U-turn.

The social media platform, previously (and still) referred to as Twitter, has come under fire for a slew of changes to the once uncontroversial site. First, the blue tick verification status was robbed from thousands of profiles and replaced with a monthly billed premium service, which sparked concerns around the spread of fake news.

Then, the iconic white bird logo was replaced with the ultra-minimalist 'X'. However, the cherry on the top has just been served, and users are absolutely raging.

Since the dawn of time, X users have been able to easily access what posts other members have 'liked'. The feature has sometimes backfired on users, like when I'm A Celeb star Christopher Biggins went viral for liking a slew of risqué videos from male adult stars.

However, those days are truly over, as X has updated the site so everyone's likes are now invisible. Yes, that means you can no longer snoop on what your local MP or secondary-school friend has been liking. Boring!

"This week we're making Likes private for everyone to better protect your privacy," X said. "You will still be able to see posts you have liked (but others cannot). Like count and other metrics for your own posts will still show up under notifications. You will no longer see who liked someone else's post. A post's author can see who liked its posts."

Swathes of X users were quick to criticise the decision, calling it the 'worst update ever' and demanding Musk reinstate visible likes. "Why does everything done to this platform only make it worse?" fumed one person.

Another agreed, commenting: "You guys are really committed to killing this app." A third added: "Bring likes back. I am a man who needs to be stalked." While a fourth simply demanded: "Put them back."

The Mirror has reached out to X for comment.
