Everton are adamant Manchester United will not sign Jarrad Branthwaite in a cut-price deal after claims they have agreed terms with the England defender.

It is understood Everton have not received any contact from United for Branthwaite, who they value at £75million. United think they can capitalise on Everton’s money troubles because of their drawn-out takeover to land Branthwaite for just £40million.

It is understood the Blues want around twice that amount for the 21-year-old centre-half, who just missed out on Euro 2024 after winning his first cap under Gareth Southgate.

United made Harry Maguire the world ’s most expensive defender when they paid Leicester £80million for him in 2019 and Everton value Branthwaite in that region.

The Blues can also point to Josko Gvardiol and Manchester City paid RB Leipzig £77.6million for the defender a year ago, while Chelsea splashed out £70million to land Wesley Fofana from Leicester in 2022.

Everton’s director of football Kevin Thelwell admits some players may be sold because of the uncertainty in the boardroom and owner Farhad Moshiri is speaking to different groups after 777 Partners’ exclusivity agreement ended last month. However, the Blues are adamant this does not mean there will be a fire sale at Goodison Park.

Thelwell and manager Sean Dyche are getting on with business and skipper Seamus Coleman has agreed a new deal to bring up 16 seasons with the Blues and the club’s last at Goodison. The Republic of Ireland defender holds the Everton record for most Premier League appearances with 364 and has been Blues captain since 2019.

“Everyone knows what Everton means to me, and I’m very proud and honoured to sign a new contract and to keep playing for this special club in the best league in the world,” said Coleman, 35. "I give it my all for the football club and I’m just really happy to extend my time here. I’m going to cherish and enjoy every moment.

“It’s hard to believe it’s going to be our last season at Goodison, such a special place to me and every Evertonian. Of course, I want to be part of that. I still feel I can do a job for this football club on and off the pitch. This being our last season at Goodison is a nice way to go into the campaign but I wouldn’t have signed the contract if I didn’t feel capable of contributing to the team.

“I’ve just played two matches for my country. I feel good and I want to help the lads on the pitch. I’m still enjoying it so what better place to do that than at the Club you love? I think the manager steadied that ship massively last season with our performances. I just want to be part of that and to continue to be a part of this football club.”
