But an undisclosed injury forced the Irishman to withdraw from his eager-anticipated cage comeback, which is now expected to take place by the end of September.

And they were left disappointed when he took to Twitter just hours after news of his injury broke to reveal a hefty Euro 2024 wager on Cristiano Ronaldo.

McGregor and Ronaldo are no strangers to one another, with the footie icon dropping in on one of the Irishman's training sessions for his 2016 rematch with Nate Diaz.

The pair, 35 and 39 respectively, were sat next to one another last December at the spectacular Day of Reckoning boxing event in Saudi Arabia.

Former two-division champion McGregor, 35, hasn't set foot inside the octagon since breaking his left leg in his trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier three years ago.

McGregor has yet to speak about the latest setback to his glittering fight career, although Chandler was quick to issue a statement after the postponement of their desert dust-up.

He wrote on Instagram: "Conor McGregor was never the safe bet as an opponent, he was always the highest risk.

“And if it doesn’t go as planned… redirect the course to something even more great."
