A boy who fell from the balcony of a high-rise building was grieving the loss of his own mum, who was killed in a car crash two weeks earlier.

Tyler Mason was just 15 when he fell from the 35th floor of the Meriton hotel balcony in the Parramatta area of Sydney, Australia. Police were treating his death as a suicide, but his family believes he wouldn't have taken his own life.

Tyler's aunt Jo-Ellen Hall, who also works as a mental health nurse, told reporters she'd been regularly checking in on her nephew after his mum's death. She told Daily Mail Australia: "There's no way it was suicide. It's 100 per cent clear this boy was not capable of jumping off the balcony. There is not one part of me that thinks it was suicide, absolutely none."

Before he fell, Tyler had been celebrating a friend's 16th birthday with five other teenagers in the hotel suite. He recorded a video, going up in the hotel elevator and appeared to be singing and smiling in the clip filmed hours earlier.

The youngster's mum had died after the car she was travelling in with a male friend crashed in Queensland. At the time of his death, he was been under the care of the Big Brown House, an organisation that helps vulnerable children and families.

The CEO of Big Brown House, Christopher Brown, said: "As it is an open Police investigation we are unable to make any comments at this time. We can confirm that our staff have followed policies and procedures and our deepest sympathies are with Tyler's family and friends during this incredibly difficult time."

The case has been passed to the coroner to decide if an inquest into Tyler's death will be held.
