An underrated Spanish destination unknown to most holidaymakers has turned out to be one of the sunniest spots in the whole of Europe, new data shows.
When people talk about heading to Europe to get some sunshine, the first place that pops into most of our heads is Spain. With the Costa de Sol a hugely popular destination for Brits in search of vitamin D, place names Malaga, Marbella and Torremolinos have become well known among holidaymakers.
But a less obvious candidate has recently been crowned as one of Europe's most sunny cities after experts analysed data from World Weather Online. According to the ranking, compiled by holiday rental portal Holidu, Malaga and Alicante bagged first and second place with 280 hours of sunshine a month each on average.
But in third place, beating holiday hotspots like Athens, Palma de Mallorca and Palermo, came the city of Murcia in south eastern Spain. Murcia is little-known as a holiday destination but boasts incredible weather, with 277.7 average sunshine hours per month and an average temperature of 18.4C (65F).
Murcia is under the radar for many travellers, meaning it is possible to avoid the crowds while basking in sunny weather year-round. With a beautiful historic centre and plenty of fun day trips to nearby beauty spots and beaches Murcia could be an ideal getaway for those seeking sunshine without the stress.

A new airport opened just outside the city with flights to Dublin, Palma de Mallorca, England and Belgium, to name a few - and Alicante airport is just a 50 minute drive away meaning it couldn’t be easier to pop for a quick weekend, or come for a longer holiday and enjoy all the region has to offer.
Nearby beaches offer plenty of options for relaxing, swimming and some of Europe’s best scuba diving with shipwrecks to explore. Meanwhile the city offers a wide range of accommodation, from the cheap and cheerful through to more luxurious options. Murcia came third in Holidu’s list of Europe’s sunniest cities, with the rest of the top 10 being made of up Catania in Italy at number four with 274.9 hours of sun hours per month.
Seville, Spain was in at number five with 273.9 hours. It was Spain again at six with Cordoba’s | 268.5 sun hours per month. Marseille in France came seventh with 267.6 monthly sun hours while Madrid was in eight with| 266.9. Zaragoza came ninth with 265.9 sun hours per month with Athens, Greece coming in tenth with 262.2 sun hours per month.
