Nick Mavar, a former deckhand known for his appearances on Deadliest Catch, has tragically passed away at the age of 59.

Nick's death occurred on Thursday afternoon following an apparent medical emergency in Naknek, Alaska. The Bristol Bay Borough Police Department confirmed the sad news to TMZ. Police are currently conducting interviews to gather more information about the circumstances surrounding Nick's death. His family has been informed.

From 2005 to 2021, Nick served as a deckhand on the F/V Northwestern, featuring in 98 episodes of the popular Discovery Channel show. He also made appearances on spin-off shows such as Deadliest Catch: Siberian Winter and Deadliest Catch: The Bait.

Nick ended up leaving the show after an appendix health scare which was documented in one of his final episodes. His health scare led the deckhand to sue Captain Sig Hansen. He alleged there wasn't a proper plan to get him outside medical help during the Covid-19 pandemic.

He explained that this delay caused his appendix to rupture and claimed that a tumour was connected but was not aware of it. He was in court for this "as recently as last year," according to TMZ. The lawsuit was filed by the F/V Northwestern’s owners in U.S. District Court in Alaska. His attorneys fault the Northwestern’s owners for failing to have Nick examined quickly and effectively. They failed the medical plan in place for treating crew members.

According to Alaska Public Media, Nick's lawyer wrote: "The delay in competent and adequate examination, testing, and diagnosis caused (Mavar’s) appendix to rupture resulting in horrendous and chronic infections, surgeries, and cancer treatment that would not have occurred had the appendix been removed prior to rupture.

Nick was seeking $1 million in damages from the F/V Northwestern’s owners.

According to the owners’ attorneys, the original protocols for crew of the show had to obey with them. They claimed that a resident medic examined Nick for abdominal pain on "multiple occasions."

They wrote: "These COVID protocols limited the exposure of the F/V Northwestern crewmembers to people who were not associated with the television show." The attorney added: "[Nick] suffered and may continue to suffer in the future, great amounts of physical pain with resultant physical disability, disfigurement and mental suffering."
