Chelsea are set to land a whopping £5million bonus because of a clause in Eden Hazard's move to Real Madrid back in 2019, despite his retirement from football seven months ago.

Hazard left the Blues to join Real in a deal worth around £130million with more than £40m in add-ons. He signed a five-year deal which would have expired this summer.

However, last June, Hazard and Real reached a mutual agreement to terminate his contract and end his time at the club after four years. During his time in Madrid, he scored just seven goals in 76 matches.

Three months after his departure from Real, Hazard announced his decision to retire at the age of 32. Although Hazard is currently not at Los Blancos and playing football entirely, bonuses inserted in his contract still apply until the end of his original deal, which is due to end at the end of June.

According to The Telegraph, the Blues are due to bank £5bn because Real have reached the Champions League final. Carlo Ancelotti's side earned a 4-3 aggregate victory over Bayern Munich in the semi-final and will face Borussia Dortmund to win the competition for the 15th time.

Hazard's deal to the Bernabeu has been regarded as one of the best pieces of business in the transfer market, with Chelsea fetching an initial £88m for the Belgian, who was 28 at the time. The rest of the fee was made up of achievable bonuses, though Hazard struggled during his time in Spain.

He played just 54 matches in four years at Real and won the Champions League in 2022 but was an unused substitute in the final against Liverpool. Chelsea can claim they got the best years of Hazard, who was such an influential player for the Blues during his time there.

In a statement social media after retiring, Hazard said: "You must listen to yourself and say stop at the right time. After 16 years and more than 700 matches played, I have decided to end my career as a professional footballer. I was able to realise my dream, I have played and had fun on many pitches around the world.

"During my career I was lucky to meet great managers, coaches and teammates - thank you to everyone for these great times, I will miss you all. I also want to thank the clubs I have played for: LOSC, Chelsea and Real Madrid; and thank the RBFA for my Belgian Selection.

"A special thank you to my family, my friends, my advisors and the people who have been close to me in good times and bad. Finally, a huge thank you to you, my fans, who have followed me for all these years and for your encouragement everywhere I have played. Now is the time to enjoy my loved ones and have new experiences. See you off the field soon my friends."
