Thiago Alcantara will leave Liverpool this summer when his contract expires, the club have confirmed.

Injury has seen the Spaniard confined to just one brief subsitute appearance in 2023/24 as his stint with the Reds comes to a close. The silky midfielder joins Adrian and Joel Matip whose deals come to an end in the coming weeks.

Jurgen Klopp and co landed the 33-year-old in a £25million deal from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2020. Thiago signed a four-year contract with the club as Liverpool were lauded for pulling off a blockbuster signing off the back of their Premier League title win, though it was not without risk.

The former Barcelona star has seen his time at Anfield disrupted by injury as he suffered a series of problems. The ace has predominantly been kept out by hip problems during his time at the club but this term has struggled with a muscle injury.

Nevertheless, Thiago has made 98 appearances for Liverpool since arriving almost four years ago. The 46-times capped maestro has earned FA Cup honours with the Reds and finished as a runner-up in the Champions League in 2021/22.

Liverpool announced: "Thiago Alcantara's time with the Reds will come to an end this summer upon the expiration of his contract. A truly special player. Thank you for everything, Thiago"

Jurgen Klopp added: "I know injuries have been a frustration for him and also for us but the level that he was able to play at when he was available was incredible. This is what I will remember.

"Now he will go in a new direction with his family and we can only wish them well. Wherever he plays next I would be happy to watch. An artist of the game who will only ever paint the most beautiful pictures."

Thiago was reportedly been spotted back in team training on Thursday, leaving the faint possibility of a final appearance at Anfield against Wolves as Jurgen Klopp also says his goodbye. The Spaniard is likely to be gifted a fond farewell by supporters who have been able to appreciate his quality, albeit rarely.
