Norwich have sacked head coach David Wagner following their play-off humbling at Leeds.

After a goalless draw in the first-leg, the Canaries were thrashed 4-0 at Elland Road on Thursday to leave them facing a third successive season in the Championship. Goals from Ilia Gruev, Joel Piroe, Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville sent Leeds to Wembley.

Wagner joined the Canaries midway through the 2022/23 season but failed to win over the supporters who believed his style of football was negative. They ended up finishing 13th, their lowest league position for five years and optimism was not high coming into this campaign.

The former Huddersfield boss appeared to defy expectations and guided them into sixth, securing a place in the play-offs. In the first-leg, Norwich seemed content to draw 0-0 at home before suffering a thrashing in the second-leg, having been second-best in almost every department.

With Norwich now set for another season in the second tier, the club have sacked Wagner and his assistant Christoph Buhler. Sporting director Ben Knapper said: "David has operated with class and dignity throughout his period as Norwich City head coach, but we now feel that the time is right for us to move in a different direction.

"We remain committed to progressing our football club, in both the short and long-term, working through a diligent and thorough strategy. The appointment of a new head coach is an important one. We will now work and continue our due diligence with the view of making an appointment in the near future."

A club statement ended: "All at Norwich City would like to place on record our thanks to both David and Christoph for their hard work and contributions to the club. We wish them well in their future careers. The club will now progress with its plans of appointing a new head coach."

It has been reported that former Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper is being considered to replace Wagner, while Arsenal assistant boss Carlos Cuesta is being looked at.

On the playing side, Norwich are set to have a busy summer with a potential overhaul of their star men as they prepare for a season without the coveted parachute payments. Jonathan Rowe, who has plunged 13 goals this season, and Brazilian midfielder Gabriel Sara are set to attract interest.

Angus Gunn has been linked with a move to Rangers, with the goalkeeper valued at around £3million. Meanwhile, Dimitrios Giannoulis, Ben Gibson and Sam McCallum are among those out of contract this summer.
