When it comes to home decorating, forking out on the perfect paint colour can set you back by a hefty sum, but one expert has shared a nifty trick for cutting costs.

A poll of 4,000 homeowners found that eight in 10 Brits redecorate their entire house at least twice during the course of ownership, while the living room is spruced up around seven times. The estimated cost of painting the interior of a three-bedroom house is estimated to cost up to £3,000, reports Airtasker.

However, Stacey Solomon's cleaning expert Iwan Carrington, from her BBC One show Sort Your Life Out, has taken to TikTok to share his clever money-saving hack that will slash your spending. The holehold guru said: "I’m doing some decorating today and I wanted to share a money-saving tip with you when you’re buying paint.

"So, we have all heard of getting paint mixed up, you can choose the posh colours and have them mixed up in a trade paint, but sometimes those machines go wrong. When this happens, they sell the mix off as a one off mix for a bargain price."

He then pointed at the tub of cream paint that was sitting in front of him, and said: "This huge tub cost me £20, usually this would be about £50 to £60." Iwan explained that while you don’t know the name of the paint shade, the vendors often paint the colour on the lid to give you a "rough idea".

"So what I do is take the tub of paint over to the window in the store, put it into the daylight next to the paint chart, so I can work out exactly what colour it is that I’m buying. Then, if I like it, I use it." He concluded: "I think the paint colour in this tub is looking fabulous in my living room." Iwan then included footage of 'one-off' mixtures that he found in store, these included tubs of Dulux Trade for £17.50 and Farrow & Ball for £12.

Impressed followers flocked to the comments to share their reaction to the economical trick, as one user penned: "What a great tip," while another agreed: "Well done, great idea. It looks lovely."

Others shared their experience of using the hack, as a third posted: "I got a small tub from £16 to £4." While a fourth added: "Try Seagulls paint on Kirkstall Road in Leeds. They recycle all the paint and sell it really cheap. They have a Facebook page too."
