"What happened was, even though I've done well, I didn't feel like I had fulfilled where I should have been in life. I felt like I'd made a lot of mistakes.
"I was regretting a lot of stuff. I was at a low point and then you drink to forget, which is never good for me because I was self-sabotaging.
"I was making the wrong choices."
The star is best known for his appearances in the hit ITVBe series, The Only Way is Essex.
But he's getting ready to appear in the inaugural series of The Challenge UK, which is based off the MTV show of the same name.

James is set to face the likes of Aisleyne Horgan-Wallace, AJ and Curtis Pritchard, Love Island's Marcel Somerville and Arabella Chi and even his fellow Towie co-star Ella Wise.

"They take your phones off you and I'd be completely submerged within the show. I was looking at it as a bit like rehab.
"I've pulled myself out of that dark place."
"But depression and s*** happens to everyone and it's how you deal with it. It's how you pick yourself back up. I'm not here on a sob story but I picked myself out.
"I'm 80% now. I'm back. I'm in probably the best shape again. I'm fit. I'm confident. Everything's back.
The Towie star admitted that he has made several important changes in his life since he first broke down.
Speaking to The Sun, he admitted: "I'm not in contact with anyone daily. I'm clear-minded. I'm focused on myself and my business. I've got no distractions.
"I’m going teetotal this next year, completely. This year is about focusing on me, no booze, no women, no dramas."
