A village in Devon which has a yearly duck race has been named one of Britain’s poshest places to live.

South Pool, near Kingsbridge, boasts a 900-year-old Grade I-listed church and the award-winning Millbrook Inn. is known for its lush landscapes which give way to picturesque beaches. Last year it was named the most beautiful village in the UK by CN Traveller as they praised its sailing brigade, smart shops and ice-cream parlours.

The area has recently seen an uptick in popularity on social media thanks to the stunning surrounding beaches with one traveller describing the nearby Banthan Beach as the "most beautiful beach without leaving the UK". But some locals were keen to keep South Pool hidden, playing down rave reviews online with one saying: “Shhh, don’t tell anyone! We locals want to keep it a secret.”

Now it can add the title of one of the poshest areas in the country, the Daily Telegraph reports. Its entry reads: "This creek-side village sits on the eastern bank of the Kingsbridge Estuary. For locals and visitors, South Pool goes hand-in-hand with the award-winning Millbrook Inn, a cosy gastro-pub.

"The Grade I-listed St Nicholas and St Cyriac church dates back to the 1100s and is built almost entirely of slate. There’s a village hall and an active community that is famous for its charity duck race."

The area around South Pool has a number of nature trails and golden beaches making it the perfect area to explore or enjoy a relaxing break. There are also a number of watersports in the area like canoeing, kayaking, surfing and paddleboarding, but those in search of a more relaxed approach can book a cruise. Canoeing trips will explore the local area and wildlife, The Daily Express reported.

History lovers can take a look at the local South Pool Church of St. Nicholas and St. Cyriac located on a hilltop, making it tower over the village. It was built in the 15th century but is known for its stained glass windows.

Village life carries with it a hefty price tag and a home in Devon's most beautiful village will set you back £844,429 on average. However, this is down from 2022, when the average cost of a house in South Pool, according to Savills, was just shy of £1 million.

This is a good deal less expensive than other posh parts of the West Country. Homes in Rock, Cornwall, which also made the Telegraph list, are worth on average £1,153,372 and Wellow, three miles out from Bath, similarly cost an average of seven figures.
