If your drains are smelly, it could be down to a nasty build-up of food particles, fat, grease and oils - and regular cleaning is necessary.

Regularly unblocking your drains can eliminate germs and odours before they build up, and can also prevent water draining too slowly. There are several products that claim to help unblock your drains, but could be expensive and have nasty chemicals in them.

But there's actually a natural solution which can be just as effective at unblocking your drains - and it's as simple as using items you probably already have in your kitchen cupboard.

Taking to TikTok, dental hygienist Lauren, who regularly shares holistic and natural tips on the platform as @agrelessbeauty44, shared "a natural way to clean drains without nasty chemicals". All you need is baking soda, white vinegar and lemon.

"Simply use one cup of baking soda and two cups of white vinegar. The combo of these two can also break up clogs and loose material," Lauren explained, pouring each thing down the sink. Then, the savvy cleaner covered the sink plug with a towel, and left it for two minutes.

Next, Lauren squeezes some lemon down the sink, which she says is "great for cleaning and provides a natural, antibacterial properties, and smells amazing".

Writing in the caption, the content creator added: "Cleaning your sink drain with baking soda and vinegar is a highly effective way to treat minor clogs. The combination of vinegar and baking soda triggers a chemical reaction that helps break down the clog. Lemon is antibacterial and great for cleaning and for an amazing scent as well!"

And it's clear Lauren isn't the only one who loves the natural hack, with one person on TikTok writing: "My husband is a plumber and uses this method all the time!!!"

If you don't happen to have these ingredients at home, it's still super cost-effective to pick up from your local supermarket.
