Farmer of cow rammed by police car 'fears trauma may have left her infertile'

The owner of the young cow seen being repeatedly rammed by a police car in shocking footage is said to be afraid the incident has left her infertile.

The 10-month-old cow, named Beau Lucy, was thrown 30ft after being slammed into by the police car. The office who deliberately hit her has been removed from frontline duties while an internal investigation is conducted.

Beau Lucy suffered grazes and a large cut on her leg when she was hit on a residential street in Feltham, West London, on Friday.

Surrey Police said officers responded on Friday evening to reports of a loose cow ”running at members of the public” in Staines-upon-Thames, just outside London. and damaging a car. It said officers spent several hours trying to catch the animal, and eventually “a decision was made to stop it using a police car.”

The calf had been earmarked from birth as a 'breeding cow", but friends of the farmer told the Mail Online the stress of the incident may have left her unable to reproduce. This would leave him thousands of pounds out of pocket if he isn't compensated.

Her owner, known only as Rob, said previously: "I think the video speaks for itself. It was quite horrific. The method of dealing with the situation was incorrect. It was wrong and I think that's the message we've learned. It could have been handled so much better. The videos were an upsetting sight."

He added: "Time will tell because we don't know what internal injuries she might have. But she's eating and she's cuddling so there's always promise when there's that."

Home Secretary James Cleverly posted on X: “I can think of no reasonable need for this action. I’ve asked for a full, urgent explanation for this. It appears to be unnecessarily heavy handed.”

The footage sparked anger in animal-loving Britain. BBC nature presenter Chris Packham tweeted: “What sort of monster rams a calf?” while animal welfare charity the RSPCA said that it would contact police over the “upsetting and distressing footage.”

Surrey Police said it had notified the Independent Office of Police conduct, which investigates misconduct allegations against officers.

Chief Inspector Sam Adcock said: "The decision to use the police car is one that was only taken after other methods to stop the cow had failed. There will be an investigation into the actions that led to this, but our focus at all times is on ensuring the safety of the public.”
