Multiple attempts to put a breathing tube into a baby Lucy Letby is accused of trying to kill would not have hurt her, a trial heard.

Child K weighed just 1lb 8oz when born premature. After two failed attempts, a breathing tube was finally placed into her on February 17, 2016.

Dr James Smith said this would not cause harm. But Child K died three days later at the neonatal unit in the Countess of Chester Hospital, Wirral.

Letby, 34, is accused of displacing the tube. She denies attempted murder, as it is not alleged that this is what killed Child K. Last year the ex-nurse was convicted of seven babies’ murders and six attempted murders.

The Manchester crown court trial continues.
