If you want to catch up with the series before the long-awaited game is released, there are a number of ways you can play cheaply or for free.

The cheapest way to play games from the Metroid series is to sign up for Nintendo Switch Online.

At the regular tier of the subscription service, you will get access to three games from the series, including arguably the most popular Metroid game.

Players who download the NES app can play the original Metroid, while the SNES app contains the hugely popular Super Metroid.

There is also a Metroid game on the Game Boy app, where you can find Metroid 2: Samus Returns.

Those who subscribe to the more expensive tier, Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, can also access two Game Boy Advance games.

The Game Boy Advance app has both Metroid: Fusion and the remake of the original game, Metroid: Zero Mission.

If people want to play more modern games from the Metroid series, then both recent releases are currently on sale.

The 2D platformer Metroid Dread has been reduced by 30-33%, from £49.99 / $59.99 to £33.29 / $41.99.

If you want to get as close to the Metroid Prime 4: Beyond as possible then there is a Prime game on sale too.

Metroid Prime Remastered is also currently on sale for Switch and costs just £24.49 / $33.99, from £34.99 / $39.99 at 30% off.
