A woman has died after arriving on a flight into Dublin Airport on Tuesday night.

Gardai and emergency services raced to the flight after being alerted to a medical emergency onboard. Despite attempts to save her, the woman, who was in her 60s, was sadly pronounced dead a short time later.

Her body was later taken to the morgue in Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown. It's understood the flight arrived into Dublin from Spain and no foul play is suspected in the woman's death.

A Gardai spokesman told DublinLive: "Gardai and emergency services were alerted to a medical emergency onboard a flight which landed at Dublin Airport, on Tuesday night, 18th June 2024. A female in her 60s was pronounced deceased a short time after landing. Her body was removed to the morgue at Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown."

Sunday World has reported that the woman did not travel alone. They reported that the woman in her 60s was travelling with her son and daughter and a friend on a Ryanair flight.

In another flight tragedy, an eight-year-old died on a SkyWest Airlines flight to Chicago after she suddenly became ill and unresponsive – despite medics’ “aggressive resuscitative efforts” upon landing. Sydney Weston, Missouri, was flying with her family from Joplin when she suffered a medical emergency, the flight she was on was rerouted to land in Peoria, Illinois on Thursday June 13.

According to the Independent, 71 minutes after take off the plane made an emergency landing at General Wayne A Downing Peoria International Airport at 7.02am on Thursday morning. The coroner's office said upon "landing in Peoria, she was not breathing and had no pulse." Despite being transferred to the OSF Healthcare Saint Francis Medical Center seven miles away, the young girl was pronounced dead at 8.02am.

The Daily Mail reported that an initial autopsy into Sydney's cause of death came back inconclusive. The Peoria County coroner's office said. last Friday several studies are pending to determine a cause of death. Whilst initial reports have been inconclusive, the coroners office have ruled out any foul play, abuse or neglect. In a statement, the family said: “Our hearts are shattered by the devastating loss of our precious daughter. We request privacy and respect as we cope with this profound grief."

A 2021 study published in The American Journal of Emergency Medicine found the global incidence of in-flight medical emergencies was 18.2 events per million passengers, with a mortality rate of 0.21 per million passengers. From plane crashes to in-plane fatalities a projected 4.7 billion passengers are expected to fly in 2024—a number that would surpass pre-pandemic levels – so it is more likely that travellers might be hearing more about tragic incidents compared to past years, Conde Nast Traveller reports.
