Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt has been banned from driving for 12 months and ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid work after breaking the leg of a motorcyclist while driving his Range Rover.

Butt, 49, admitted to a charge of careless driving causing serious injury in April relating to an incident in Burnley, Lancashire on 17 October 2022. The victim, Andrew Filden, suffered a broken leg after Butt failed to spot him when driving and required surgery that led to rods being inserted into his left leg following the incident.

The maximum sentence for such an offence is two years in jail or an unlimited fine, but Butt avoided jail time at Blackburn Magistrates’ court on Friday morning.

John Dye, defending the ex-United player, admitted that the loss of his licence would have a severe impact. He said: “The loss of his licence is going to be extremely inconvenient to him and his family but that is the inevitable consequence of this case.”

Butt told the court in a statement: “I could not be more sorry.”

Butt became the League Two outfit's chief executive back in October 2022. He replaced Gary Neville, who had previously spent eight years in the role.
