Additionally, this injury and subsequent surgery put his participation in the upcoming Olympics in serious jeopardy.

What happened to Andy Murray?

The 37-year-old British tennis legend sustained a back injury on June 19 during his match at Queen's.

In a difficult and distressing moment, he struggled to move during his last-16 match against Australian player Jordan Thompson.

It was an awkward atmosphere because everyone could see there was a problem and I didn't know if I should play or stop. It's disappointing.

Despite taking a medical time-out, Thompson retired from the match with a score of 4-1 in the first set, emotionally bidding farewell to the Queen's crowd.

Murray said about his injury: "When I walked up the stairs before going out, and in the pre-match warm-up, my back was uncomfortable.

"It was an awkward atmosphere because everyone could see there was a problem and I didn't know if I should play or stop. It's disappointing.

"In hindsight, I wish I hadn't gone on the court.

“I have neural pain across my lower back.

“It’s a nerve-type sort of discomfort.

"It’s been pretty uncomfortable and today was just a numbness and loss of strength, power and control.

“Like all tennis players, we have degenerative joints and stuff in the back but it’s all predominantly been left-sided for me my whole career.

"I have never had too many issues with the right side.

"So maybe there is something that can be done between now and then to help the right side.”

What did Leon Smith say?

Leon Smith, the British Davis Cup captain and a childhood coach, said: “I’ve seen the reports and on social media and that’s not my understanding.

“This has come from one source and had a knock-on effect, a lot of people are reporting it.

“But that's not my understanding. He obviously went through a procedure yesterday and you have to wait and see now.

“My understanding is no decision has been made and let's hope for the best for Andy.”
