The Streets' Mike Skinner shares emotional tribute to The Prodigy's Keith Flint

Mike Skinner shared an emotional tribute to Keith Flint at The Isle of Wight Festival.

The Streets frontman took to the stage at the festival on Friday to a packed audience who travelled across The Solent to enjoy three days of live music. This weekend, music lovers will see the likes of Scouting For Girls, Bradley Simpson, Keane, Loreen, McFly and Green Day take to the stage.

But as the first day kicked off, Skinner, 45, hyped the crowd ahead of the headline act, The Prodigy and fans at the front of the crowd didn't know where to look. The Birmingham-born musician jumped off stage and made his way to the barrier before getting in and amongst the crowd.

As his performance went on, he encouraged fans to dance around, comparing the audience to a synchronised swimming team. Although he was in great spirits, Mike shared a tearful tribute to The Prodigy, including the late Keith Flint who tragically took his own life aged 49 in March 2019.

While performing Dry Your Eyes Mate, Mike was seen in tears as his face appeared on the giant screens for the audience. Praising The Prodigy, he told fans he "quite frankly owes it to The Prodigy." Mike's emotional tribute comes after he shared a candid admission into his life at the height of his fame.

The 2006 release of The Street's third album documented his downward spiral following the devastating deaths of his dad, auntie and niece who all died in a close time period. Reflecting on this, Skinner told The Independent that it was "incredibly traumatic". He went on to reveal he also lost tens of thousands of pounds while spread-betting.

Spread betting is a strategy when the person betting does not own the assets that they're betting on, including stock and commodity. Spread betters speculate whether the asset's prices will rise or drop and often use prices offered by a broker. He told the publication: "I wouldn't want to do that again. Which seems crazy, being in the charts, being in the newspapers…

"I like the Noel Gallagher attitude: it's your job to show the next generation that it's amazing being a creative. Stop complaining and take your mental collapse like a proper rock star." Despite being at the top of their game when they released their third album, the band flogged 700,000 copies – a lot less than its predecessor which sold 3 million.
