Teenager's mum says she's 'not slept' as she makes direct plea to missing son

The mother of missing British teenager Jay Slater has said she has “not slept” and “can’t give up” on her son.

Asked how the family was coping with the situation, Debbie Duncan said: “We’re not. I’m not coping very well at all. I’ve not slept, I’m exhausted. It’s been awful. I can’t give up on him, I just can’t." Jay Slater’s mother Debbie Duncan said she did not know whether the Spanish authorities turning down an offer of help from the UK was because they viewed it as “an insult”.

Questioned on whether the Spanish authorities should have accepted help from Lancashire Constabulary, Ms Duncan said: “I believe they said they’ve got enough resources and they don’t need the help from English police. I don’t know if they find it an insult – I really don’t know. I really don’t know. They say they’ve got enough resources to get on with the investigation… I don’t know, I don’t know.”

Asked if her head was spinning from the past few days, she said: “It is, it is. People say: ‘Yeah, I understand’ – no, you don’t, you don’t understand.” Debbie Duncan said “we just need you home” as she issued a plea to her missing son, Jay Slater. Asked what her message would be for Mr Slater, she told the PA news agency: “We just need you home – we just need him home.”

Meanwhile, Jay's dad made an emotional visit to view the search for his son and sobbed: “I just want the boy back”. Warren Slater, 58, was supported by Jay’s brother Zak at the scene in Masca, close to the spot where the apprentice bricklayer was last seen shortly after 8am on Monday morning.

As police and mountain experts spent a sixth successive day working to find Jay, Warren and Zak were also joined nine of Jay's friends. It was the first time Jay’s family members had felt able to visit the area. Warren and Zak, 24, wrapped their arms around each other in solidarity while looking out onto the search.

Debbie also hit out at online trolls and conspiracy theorists who are targeting her and her family. She said: “People keep asking on social media ‘why aren’t I up there?’ and calling me the new Karen Matthews. I just can’t face it.”
