Adrian is set to reject a new contract with Liverpool to join Real Betis.

Jurgen Klopp brought the keeper to the Reds in 2019 to serve as the main back-up to Alisson. He slipped down the pecking order once Caoimhin Kelleher graduated from the academy, with the Irishman taking on the role of Alisson's deputy instead.

Adrian made his last appearance for Liverpool back in 2022, before spending all of the season just gone sitting on the bench. But he has been a key member of the squad, so much so that he was offered a new contract earlier this month.

"Liverpool FC has submitted its Premier League retained list following the end of the 2023-24 season, with confirmation of the departure of several senior and Academy players," the Reds said in a statement.

"Contract offers have been made to senior goalkeeper Adrian – who has made 26 appearances since signing for the club in August 2019 – and Academy stoppers Jacob Poytress and Reece Trueman."

According to the Daily Mail, though, Adrian will reject those advances and instead return to his homeland. He actually began his career at Betis before moving to the Premier League with West Ham.

He would go on to make 26 appearances in all competitions during his five years at Anfield. He made enough appearances to be handed a winners medal for the Premier League in 2020, the UEFA Super Cup in 2019, the Club World Cup in the same year and the Carabao Cup in 2024.

If Adrian does move on, it would represent somewhat of an issue for Liverpool, with Kelleher also looking to leave. In the scenario that both do depart, the Reds will need to sign two new back-ups for Alisson.

Adrian will clearly hold fond memories of his time on Merseyside, despite his lack of game-time. Speaking last month, he hailed former boss Klopp and looked back on his special spell at Anfield.

“It was a great feeling to win the Premier League, to be involved in the squad. A really strange situation to celebrate without our fans and really difficult but we celebrated as much as possible," he said.

"Lifting the trophy in the empty Kop, we felt with great company because we knew all the Liverpool fans at home were sharing and celebrating with us. Those moments pass so quick. I think it was the right decision to celebrate [in 2022], to share with the fans.

“Everyone that was on the bus or the street celebrating will remember that day for all their life. The philosophy of Jurgen, his style of play, is really, really special.”
