When it comes to life as a senior royal, Queen Camilla is no stranger to travelling as part of her duties, as she regularly ventures to all four corners of the British Isles and even overseas on royal engagements. Yet like many of us, Camilla knows all too well how taxing a long journey can be - but recently revealed one of her favourite ways to pass the time while caught up in a long drive.

Speaking on the latest episode of The Queen’s Reading Room podcast, the book loving royal revealed that her favourite way to make a long journey go quicker, is to actually listen to a good audiobook! “I think audiobooks, long drives are absolutely wonderful for, because you can lose yourself,’ explained the Queen.

Reflecting on just how engrossed she had been in certain books, the avid reader even confessed: “I’ve got to places and haven’t got out of the car because I’ve just got to see what happens next."

Yet despite the appeal of a good audiobook, Camilla still can’t beat the real thing and candidly revealed that she would always prefer to read a paper book. “On the whole I’d much prefer to read a proper book, to feel a proper book, to turn the pages and go back,” she added. “ But if you’re in a hurry and you want to listen to a story while you’re getting ready it’s always there.”

Interestingly, the Queen also highlighted how part of the enjoyment also boiled down to whoever was narrating the book, as she concluded: “It also very much depends on the reader - sometimes you get brilliant readers and sometimes you get atrocious ones.”

The latest insight into the book-loving royal’s love of literature is far from the first time she has opened up about her passion for reading in recent months, with King Charles’ wife frequently offering glimpses into her book choices in her weekly podcast.

Earlier this year, one such insight involved the Queen revealing her love of a book called Angélique, which even saw her secretly wishing she could become the main character!

Recounting her first ‘grown-up’ book experience back in May, Camilla explained: “I can remember a book called Angélique, which was written by a woman called Anne Golon. It was about this beautiful French woman that goes on a series of completely mad adventure and in one she ended up in the court of the Sun King, Louis XIV.”

Recalling how young she would’ve been at the time, the Queen then went on to add: “I must’ve been about eleven or twelve and it was incredibly exciting!”

However, it was the next part of the conversation which truly resonated with many listeners as Camilla recalled how in her youth she had wanted so desperately to emulate the main character Angélique.
