The Open is golf's most famous tournament. And as the countdown begins to the 2024 edition at Royal Troon, this Daily Mirror special edition takes a look back at the legends of the game who have helped make the competition what it is.

The tournament, which was first played in 1860 when Willie Park Snr took the title at Prestwick, has produced drama and stories galore through the years. And seen some of the biggest names in the game take home the famous Claret Jug. From Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Arnold Palmer leading the American charge in the 1960s, 70s and 80s, to the emergence of a certain Tiger Woods as he put on a masterclass at St Andrews.

We look back at the brilliant Brits - Tony Jacklin, Sandy Lyle and Nick Faldo - whose successes helped fire a European charge across the Majors and in the Ryder Cup. And of course those who will be forever linked to The Open - Earnie Els, Darren Clarke, Padraig Harrington, Jon Daly and the magical Seve.

This 48-page special is packed with amazing stories, from Ian Woosnam losing out on the Claret Jug for having two many clubs in his bag, Jean Van de Velde's meltdown on the 18th while looking a certain winner, and the 'clerical error' that scuppered Mark Roe's Open dreams. And one of the strangest stories of them all when Maurice Flitcroft blagged his way into the tournament and shot the highest one-round score ever seen at The Open!

We also bring you an A-to-Z of the tournament - look back at Rory McIlroy’s first win over a decade ago and the year Watson turned back the clock at Turnberry at the age of 59. Add to that some stunning images, this special publication is the ideal way to prepare for what is set to be four brilliant days of action and drama at Royal Troon.
