Princess Anne needs further treatment for injuries she sustained after being reportedly kicked by a horse on her Gatcombe Park estate.

The Princess Royal, 73, was taken to hospital on Sunday with minor head injuries and a concussion after emergency services were sent to her sprawling Gloucestershire estate. She was injured while walking her horse on the property, with an air ambulance sent to treat her before she was transferred by road to Bristol Southmead Hospital for tests, treatment and observation.

In a statement on Monday, Buckingham Palace said she would need to spend more time at the hospital. But a spokesperson added that she is expected to make a "full and swift recovery" with other members of the royal family sending their well wishes.

They said: "The Princess Royal has sustained minor injuries and concussion following an incident on the Gatcombe Park estate yesterday evening. Her Royal Highness remains in Southmead Hospital, Bristol, as a precautionary measure for observation and is expected to make a full and swift recovery.

"The King has been kept closely informed and joins the whole royal family in sending his fondest love and well-wishes to the princess for a speedy recovery." The Princess is understood to be awake, but her concussion has meant that precise details of the incident have not been confirmed as of yet.

While there is no exact stated cause, the Princess' medical team have said her injuries are consistent with a potential impact from a horse's head or legs. The spokesperson added that she is "recovering well" and "in a comfortable condition", with her extended stay at the hospital primarily a "precautionary measure for further observation".

But they added that the Palace would not be sharing any further details of her condition or the incident just yet. They continued: "Her Royal Highness is receiving appropriate expert care. No further details are being shared at this stage.

"Her Royal Highness will remain in Southmead Hospital unless or until her medical team advise otherwise."

It is understood the princess was walking within the protected perimeter of Gatcombe Park estate when the incident occurred, and no other individual is believed to have been involved. Her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, who was on the estate at the time, went with her to hospital.

Anne’s daughter, Zara Tindall, and son, Peter Phillips, were also on the estate at the time, but it is not known who raised the alarm. On doctor's advice, Anne will miss several engagements this week, including the state banquet for the Japanese State Visit on Tuesday and an overseas tour to Canada, which was due to start this weekend.
