Terracotta Army: The Discovery With Dan Snow (9pm C5)
Fifty years ago, one of the most important archaeological discoveries ever made was found by chance in Xi’an, China.
Local farmers were digging a well when they discovered clumps of clay that got larger the deeper they dug.
A local archaeologist raced to the site and, as he pieced the pottery together, he realised that he was rebuilding a man made of clay and dressed in armour - and so the first of the warriors known as the Terracotta Army was unearthed after 2,000 years.
Historian Dan Snow has long had a fascination with the discovery, and now he travels to China to not only get up close and personal to the individual statues - a rare privilege - but to find out how and why they were created in the first place.
