Lewis Hamilton was left stunned after Mercedes team-mate George Russell joked about his “Spanish girlfriends”.
The pair were both involved in a fan event ahead of last weekend’s Spanish GP. During a conversation with a host, Russell admitted that he was a fan of food from the nation due to the influence of his Spanish girlfriend Carmen Montero Mundit.
They have been together since 2020. Seven-time world champion Hamilton then got involved by replying: "I don't have a Spanish girlfriend so I don't really know a lot of Spanish foods."
Russell then left his teammate gobsmacked by joking: "You don't have a Spanish girlfriend, you have Spanish girlfriends.” That saw a smile break out on Hamilton’s face before he replied: "Okay."
Hamilton then continued: "I don't know a lot of... couscous?" The crowd at the fan event laughed awkwardly as paella was suggested to the Brit.

The exchange between the two Mercedes stars is just the latest awkward moment that the pair have had.
Hamilton previously suggested that he would not beat his teammate in qualifying after Russell was given Mercedes’ new front wing. He said: “I don’t anticipate being ahead of George in qualifying, particularly this year, but we’ve just got to keep pushing, and the races are strong.”

Russell replied by claiming that there was no preferential treatment between the duo. He said: “I think that was probably comments in the heat of the moment because he knows full well that we get the same treatment.
"Lewis is a winner, and of course these years have been frustrating for all of us, but especially for him. He’s been used to winning every single season he competes in, and hasn’t won in three years. So as I said, it’s frustrating for him, it’s frustrating for all of us, but I’m sure he didn’t mean it as it came across.”
Russell currently sits seventh in the F1 Drivers’ Standings on 81 points, with Mercedes teammate Hamilton just a place and 11 points behind. The latter enjoyed his best performance of the season so far last time out.
Hamilton earned his first podium of the season with P3 in Barcelona. Russell finished one place behind. The pair will be hoping for another positive result this weekend in Austria at the Red Bull Ring.
