These beaches are so picturesque they look like they could be in the Maldives - and locals are so protective about keeping their stunning spaces free from tourists they don't want anyone to know about them.

There's nothing nicer than being on holiday and sitting on a picturesque beach taking it all in - and now you can do the same in the UK with these five secret hidden gems. So while the weather is hot, the sun is shining and you've got your summer wardrobe out in full swing, why not take a trip to one of these beaches and relax like you're abroad, without having to get on a plane. Achmelvich Bay, Scotland

Achmelvich Bay is located on the northwest coast of Scotland, near the village of Lochinver in the Scottish Highlands. It has been regarded as one of the best beaches in Scotland, so you can expect to see magnificent white sandy beaches and crystal clear water - and the chance to even spot a seal or two. However it can get busy during the summer, but on a clear day, it is described as a beach that looks like it could be from the Mediterranean.

The Outer Hebrides is a chain of remote islands located in Scotland, described as "heaven on Earth". UK Hidden Gems said the Outer Hebrides is a hidden gem and explained: "Their remote and unspoiled nature, with stunning landscapes, rugged coastlines, pristine beaches, and rich Gaelic culture, make them a unique and captivating destination for travellers seeking tranquillity and natural beauty" and said they're not as touristy as you may think.

Three Cliffs Bay, Wales

Located on the Gower Peninsula in South Wales, Three Cliffs Bay is a tranquil place thanks to its limestone cliffs, golden beaches and rich greenery. It is a more remote location, that takes a bit of a walk to get to, but it makes it even more secluded. Near the village of Parkmill, approximately 15 miles west of Swansea. There is parking at the nearby Pennard Cliffs car park, and then you can take the beautiful trail along the footpath to the bay.

Portheras Cove, England

Another that is a much more secluded spot is Portheras Cove, on the north coast of Cornwall, near the village of Pendeen and the town of St Just. It is a 15-20 minute walk from the nearest car park - but it's definitely worth the trek. The beach offers stunning views and crystal clear waters - and it's never usually too busy either, making it a great place to escape the crowds in busy Cornwall.

Embleton Bay, England

Embleton Bay is located in Northumberland and offers long golden sandy beaches. The hidden and secluded beach has beautiful views of the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle. It is just to the south of Newton-by-the-Sea and north of Craster.
