A British sailor found dead off a Greek island was "almost certainly unconscious" before he entered the water, authorities have revealed.

The unnamed 44-year-old "appeared to be hit" on the left side of his head according to a coastguard update which confirmed he had been injured before he fell into the water. The man's body had been discovered in Spetses and officials say he was "found floating in the sea".

Coastguards have deemed the death "puzzling" after a body was pulled from the island's old port area showing signs of a head wound. Experts have said it is currently a "mystery" as to how he died and little progress has been made in official investigations.

An official told The Sun: "There was a gash to the left side of his head, a wound that is puzzling us. He seems to have been hit. We hope to have answers soon because right now it is a mystery as to how he died." Police, coastguard officials and locals have confirmed "nearly no" progress on uncovering how the man lost his life.

A separate official said: "There are things that don't add up. The probe continues with witness testimonies and a full inquiry is underway." It was initially believed the sailor had fallen into the sea from a wharf in the island's old port area but this has since been contested.

An unnamed police insider said: "Some are now saying he fell from a boat. What is sure is that he had an injury on the left side of his head and was almost certainly unconscious when he fell into the sea." Nobody has come forward to report the man as missing and locals are confused by the death. One businessman living in the area said nobody knows "what the hell happened" and described it as "tragic".

An autopsy report is expected to release in the coming days but it is believed an "exact cause of death" could take several months. The Brit man's body was transferred to a coroner's office in the port city of Piraeus.
