Police were led on a high-speed chase before the driver finally came unstuck when the stolen car became lodged in a subway.
The VW Golf, understood to be have been taken from Bolton, Lancashire in the early hours of this morning, attracted officers' attention in Huyton, Merseyside. After the driver failed to stop when instructed, police gave chase as they tried to bring the car under control.
Their pursuit only ended when the car drove into a subway and the reckless driver had "nowhere left to go". Pictures, which have been shared this morning by Merseyside Police's road policing unit, showed officers and detectives surrounding the car stuck inside as they finally bought the chase to an end.
The LiverpoolEcho reports the car was unable to get out due to a set of stairs at the end of the underpass and couldn't move, allowing officers to swoop as the chase came to an unexpected early conclusion. A spokesperson for the force said they believed the car had been stolen but did report that damage was done to two other motors before the driver was eventually stopped.
Merseyside Police said in a statement this morning: "This VW Golf was stolen in Bolton and failed to stop for patrols in Huyton, colliding with two members of the public’s vehicles in the process. The pursuit ended when the vehicle entered a subway (yes a subway) and had nowhere left to go." The Mirror has contracted Merseyside Police for more information.
