Rapper Nicki Minaj gave the Royal Family an unexpected shoutout during her performance in the UK last night as she gave a moment of silence to her "dear friend" Princess Diana.

During Nicki's concert at the Resorts World Arena in Birmingham, the 41-year-old singer shared her unlikely love for the former Princess of Wales who passed when the rapper was just 14 years old. Nicki channeled her alter-ego Martha Zolanski as she put on a fake British accent and asked the cheering crowd to give a moment of silence for Princess Diana who died 26 years ago.

As she took to the stage in her ripped jeans and hot-pink silk gloves, Nicki shouted to the crowd: "Wales - it always reminds me of a dear friend of mine, well she's not here anymore, but the Princess of Wales. Let's have a moment of silence for her."

This shoutout most likely was also a nod Nicki's 2023 hit song Princess Diana featuring rapper Ice Spice. Despite the connection, Nicki's fans were caught off guard by the dedication, as they took to X, formerly Twitter, sharing their thoughts. One fan joked: "A dear friend of mine... She was 14 when Diana died..." And another replied: "The way the minute's silence was 3 and a half seconds." And a third added: "i was there last night. such a moment."

Nicki's shoutout comes as she has been making shocking headlines throughout her European tour including being forced to cancel one of her gigs after getting arrested. The US rapper was detained by police in Amsterdam, who arrested her for carrying “soft drugs” – something she adamantly denied on social media.

During her run-in with the police, Nicki was forced to spend five to six hours in a jail cell before being released without charge. After her time behind bars, the Bang Bang singer was late to board her flight to the UK which resulted in her missing her show at Manchester's Co-Op Live Arena. Although Nicki couldn't make it in time for her show, she made sure to still do something special for her dedicated fans. On Sunday evening, Nicki held an impromptu meet and greet at her hotel room where she apologised and met some of her Barbz.
