As England inch within touching distance of winning the Euros 2024 Championship, the King and Queen were among the first to congratulate them while Aston Villa fan Prince William celebrated following Ollie Watkins’ stunning last-minute goal

England’s heroes have been congratulated by the King and Prince William as they netted a place in the Euro 2024 men’s finals.

The Lions clinched a last minute 2-1 victory over the Netherlands in Dortmund on Wednesday night. Captain Harry Kane equalised Xavi Simons’ goal in the first half on a penalty, before Ollie Watkins scored again in the 90th minute - saving England fans from what would have no doubt been nail-biting extra time.

Aston Villa fan Prince William led the celebrations after Villa striker Watkins’ goal brought it home in the final moments, with England now set to take on Spain in Sunday night’s final. In a personally signed message on X, formerly Twitter, William wrote: “What a beauty, Ollie! Congratulations England! #EURO2024 Finalists. W”.

Meanwhile, a personally signed message from the King was released by the Palace to congratulate the team. The King’s message read: “My wife and I join all our family in wishing you the warmest congratulations on reaching the final of the U.E.F.A. European Championship – and in sending our very best wishes for Sunday’s match.

“If I may encourage you to secure victory before the need for any last minute wonder-goals or another penalties drama, I am sure the stresses on the nation’s collective heart rate and blood pressure would be greatly alleviated! Good luck, England.” It was signed “Charles R”.

The Prince has already been spotted cheering the Lions on during the tournament, and travelled to Dusseldorf at the weekend showing a raw display of emotion. The 42-year-old, who is President of the Football Association, watched England’s clash against Switzerland in the quarter-finals, and was spotted cheering and singing along with the other fans in the stadium.

One body language expert said the Royal showed a "more expressive side" to his personality by displaying "rare raw emotion" during the game and going "a step further" than he normally would at Royal engagements.

Sir Keir Starmer also hailed England’s Euros semi-final win against the Netherlands, as No 10 confirmed he will head to Berlin for the tournament’s final. “What a game England and what a winner,” the Prime Minister wrote on X, formerly Twitter, as he attended the Nato summit in Washington DC. “Berlin here we come!” he added.

Sir Keir had earlier managed to watch Harry Kane score England’s equaliser in the match – in a room with his Dutch counterpart. The Prime Minister got out of his seat as the spot-kick was drilled home, then shook hands with the Netherlands’ Dick Schoof. He posted on X: “Picked the right moment to pop out from Nato meetings and check the score…”
