Police have issued a major update after two suitcases with body parts were found near Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol. A man had been seen ’acting suspiciously’ the night before

Police have issued a major update after human remains were found in two suitcases on and near a famous UK landmark.

A man was seen acting suspiciously on Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol after arriving by taxi just before midnight on Wednesday, July 10. A suitcase containing human remains was later found on the bridge. A second suitcase was found a short time later, also containing human body parts. Eyewitnesses said that blood had been found on the floor at the bridge.

In a new update late on Thursday afternoon, police released a CCTV image of the man wanted in connection with the incident. Members of the public have been urged not to approach him and call 999 if they spot him, quoting reference number 5224180010 to the call handler.

The man, who has not been named, is described as Black with a beard. He was wearing a black Adidas baseball cap, black jeans, a black jacket, black trainers with thick white soles and had a black backpack. Police believe he left the bridge in the direction of Leigh Woods.

Officers have said they are "reviewing CCTV" and "working on tracking the man’s movements after he left the bridge" following a helicopter search last night, which failed to locate him. "At this time, we’re not aware of any current risk to the wider public", police added. The bridge - a major thoroughfare and iconic landmark of the West Country - remained closed on Thursday. The incident has sparked a major emergency response, including a police helicopter and HM Coastguard helicopter.

Police said additional high-visibility patrols are being carried out in the area. Avon and Somerset Police said earlier: "At 11.57pm yesterday, Wednesday, July 10, we received a report of a man acting suspiciously on Clifton Suspension Bridge. Officers arrived within 10 minutes, but the man had already left the area, leaving the suitcase behind. A second suitcase was located nearby a short time later. Sadly, it is believed the suitcases contain human remains."

According to witnesses, the man was seen acting suspiciously with the suitcase, before it was later found to have human remains inside. Staff at the bridge are said to have challenged a man dragging the bags, who then ran away.

Carla Denyer, who was elected a week ago as the new MP for Bristol Central, a constituency which includes the Clifton Suspension Bridge, has thanked the police for their swift action. Officers were said to be on the scene within ten minutes of the first call on Wednesday night.
