Man arrested for ‘Islamophobic’ hack of Network Rail system

A man has been arrested for allegedly hacking the Wi-Fi at dozens of UK train stations and displaying terrorism-related messages.

Yesterday customers attempting to log onto the Wi-Fi at train stations managed by Network Rail found the landing page replaced by a message reading ‘We love you, Europe’, followed by Islamophobic messages.

British Transport Police have since confirmed a man has been arrested in connection with the attack, believed to be an employee of Global Reach Technology, who supply Wi-Fi to Network Rail, the Mail reports.

The suspect has been arrested on suspicion of offences under the Computer Misuse Act 1990 and offences under the Malicious Communications Act 1988.

London Euston, Birmingham New Street and Manchester Piccadilly were among those affected by the attack, which was believed to have targeted around 19 stations across the UK.

The Wi-Fi is thought to be still down after it was taken offline and police are investigating.

It was understood that other organisations have been impacted too, but the Wi-Fi provider Telent has denied this.

No personal data has been affected, Metro understands, but enquiries are ongoing.
