A man has been arrested in Manchester city centre after a copy of the Koran was allegedly burned in an incident that was livestreamed on social media.

The event took place at the Glade of Light memorial, which honors the victims of the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing.

The 47-year-old man was detained on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence and is currently in custody for questioning.

Assistant Chief Constable Stephanie Parker expressed understanding of the concerns this incident may raise within some of the city’s diverse communities. She acknowledged the widespread circulation of a live video of the event and emphasized that while freedom of expression is a right, actions intended to cause harm or distress will be met with appropriate action by authorities.
