Three men are being treated in hospital after being stabbed in a series of ‘random attacks’ in Dublin this afternoon.
Residents of the Stoneybatter area, west of Temple Bar near the centre of the capital, were told not to leave their homes this afternoon after reports of violence.
A man has been arrested following a serious incident, Irish police said.
Two of the men were left with injuries described as serious but not life-threatening, while the third man had less serious injuries.
The Irish Times reported that at least one of the victims was attacked in their own doorway, and they were all understood to have been stabbed with regular household implements.
Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan said this evening: ‘I am receiving updates from an Garda Siochana about the situation in Stoneybatter.
‘The suspect is now in custody and the victims of this awful random attack are receiving medical attention.’
Attacks reportedly took place across North Circular Road, Oxmantown Road and Ben Eadair Road, before police made an arrest in Manor Place.
Those injured have been taken to hospital, where none are thought to be in a life-threatening condition, the newspaper reported.
There is a large garda presence in the area and other emergency services have attended.
The alleged attacker is being detained at a garda station in Dublin.
A Garda spokesperson said: ‘There is no ongoing risk to the public at this time.
‘Further information will be provided when available.’
