Donald Trump has assured followers his first address to Congress of his second term in office ‘will be big’ in a post on his social media site.
The US President wrote on Truth Social in his signature all-capitals style that he will ‘tell it like it is’ when he delivers a speech to both the Senate and the House of Representatives tomorrow night.
It comes a few days after peace talks in Ukraine were sensationally derailed following a televised ill-tempered row in the Oval Office on Friday.
Trump and his Vice President JD Vance accused Volodymyr Zelensky of not being grateful enough for US support in the war and not being willing to trust Russia’s Vladimir Putin.
The Ukrainian President left the White House soon afterwards, without signing a lucrative minerals deal which was due to provide a form of US backstop against a future Russian invasion.
Since then, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has held a summit in London which signalled a shift in approach from Europe away from relying on the US for security support.
Tomorrow’s speech is billed as an address to joint session of Congress.
Similar speeches after the first year of a President’s term are typically referred to by the more familiar term ‘State of the Union address’.
In his most recent previous address as President, from January 2020, Trump had just avoided being convicted in his first impeachment.
He took a baldly political tone, saying Democrats wanted to remove Americans’ healthcare in what he deemed ‘a socialist takeover’.
House speaker Nancy Pelosi famously reacted to the speech by theatrically tearing up her copy as she stood behind the President.
